Scotts Osmocote® Professional Native Potting & Planting Mix

A specially formulated, free draining potting and planting mix that creates ideal conditions for Australian native and other phosphorus-sensitive plants in pots and the garden. It includes Scotts Osmocote® that feeds for 6 months as well as a wetting agent to help water soak in.

  • Contains Scotts Osmocote® controlled release fertiliser suitable for native plants that provides nutrition and trace elements for up to 6 months
  • Low phosphorus to prevent yellowing leaves and phosphorus toxicity
  • Next generation water crystals for moisture retention
  • Wetting agent added to ensure uniform wetting of mix and prevent drying out
  • Added calcium to promote stronger plants and stems
  • Boosted levels of iron to promote healthy green foliage

Low phosphorus

Australian soils are naturally deficient in phosphorus and our native plants have adapted completely. Fertilisers, soils and potting mixes with more than 2-3% phosphorus cause yellowing of leaves and poor overall health. High levels of phosphorus cause chemical binding of other nutrients in the soil that prevent native flora from absorbing them

Boosted iron & calcium

Iron and calcium promote healthy dark green foliage and help prevent phosphorus toxicity.

Wetting agent

Assists moisture to soak into the mix and helps plant roots absorb nutrients

Australian Standard

Certified to meet the Australian Standard for Premium potting mixes

25L bags

Suitable for

All Australian native plants

Proteas, leucadendrons, leucospermums, serrurias and other phosphorus senstitive South African plants

Safe to use on new native plants - the controlled release of nutrients means it will not burn soft leaves or tender young roots

Not suitable for

Don't use in hydroponic growing systems or ponds

Don't use on lawns - use only specifically named lawn topdress soils on grassed areas

How it works

  • Native Potting & Planting Mix provides the ideal growing environment for all phosphorus sensitive plants
  • It has been designed and is guaranteed to grow better plants from seedlings and cuttings to mature, well established trees, shrubs, grasses and climbers

How to use

In pots, tubs and planter boxes

  1. Use Native Potting & Planting Mix straight from the bag - don't mix it with other materials. Close the bag tightly after use
  2. Water each plant well an hour or so before repotting, and leave to drain
  3. Choose a clean container with large drainage holes and partly fill it with fresh mix out of the bag
  4. Carefully knock the plant to be potted up from its existing pot without disturbing roots too much, removing only obviously damaged or dead roots
  5. Place the plant in the centre of the pot (if potting up individually) or position it where you want it grow in a larger container that will eventually hold several plants
  6. Fill in with Native Potting & Planting Mix to within 2-3cm of the top rim of the pot and press lightly
  7. Tap the new pot or container gently on the bench to help the new mix settle in and around the roots - do not pack it down
  8. Water the pot thoroughly (until water runs from the drainage holes) then allow it to drain freely. If necessary, top the mix up again to the suggested level. 9. Place the pot or container in the shade for a few days to allow the plant to settle and acclimatise before moving back to its permanent home

In the garden

  1. Dig out each planting hole slightly deeper and about twice the width of the pot the plant is coming from
  2. Work Native Potting and Planting Mix into the soil you have removed at the ratio of about 50:50 and place about 10cm or so in the base of the planting hole
  3. Carefully knock the plant to be potted up from its existing pot without disturbing roots too much, removing only obviously damaged or dead roots
  4. Position the plant so the soil will be at the same level on the stem as it was in the pot and backfill with blended soil and potting mix
  5. Firm lightly and water well to settle soil.
  6. Water newly planted natives at least once a week, or more often in very hot, dry weather.

Australian native plants resent having their roots disturbed. When planting out or potting up, try to keep the root ball intact and don't 'tease' out the roots. Carefully break off the upper 'crust' of the potting mix and rake your fingers gently down the root mass to loosen the outer surface so roots will grow out into the new potting mix or garden soil.

When to use

  • Potting mixes can be used at any time of the year.
  • Repotting or planting out of established pot plants is best done either in Spring or Autumn - avoid Winter or Summer as the extremes of temperature may stress plants
  • Flowering plants should be repotted after they have flowered - enjoy the blooms first!
