Sandy loam

Bonsai Mix contains sandy loam (soil) in addition to the usual composted pine bark, to help it retain moisture and nutrients for longer in the shallow bowls and pots used for traditional bonsai

Wetting agent

Assists moisture to soak into the mix and helps plant roots take up nutrients

Australian Standard

Certified to meet the Australian Standard for Premium potting mixes

10L bag

Suitable for

All traditional bonsai, including evergreen or deciduous, flowering or foliage trees and shrubs.

Starting new bonsai from seedlings or rooted cuttings

The controlled release of nutrients from the included Scotts Osmocote® means it will not burn soft leaves or tender young roots

Not suitable for

Don't use in hydroponic growing systems

Don't use on lawns - use only specifically named lawn topdress soils on grassed areas

How it works

  • Bonsai Mix provides the ideal moisture and nutrient environment for healthy, strong plants
  • It provides a secure 'anchorage' in the shallow containers traditionally used for bonsai

How to use

  1. Use Bonsai Mix straight from the bag - don't mix it with other materials. Close the bag tightly after use
  2. Choose a clean container with large drainage holes that is in proportion to the size of your bonsai plant and its root system. The existing pot may be re-used after thorough washing
  3. Position anchor wires through the drainage holes, then cover the base of the container with mesh (to prevent potting mix washing out) and a layer of grit or coarse washed river sand to aid drainage
  4. Water the plant thoroughly, then carefully remove it from its existing pot
  5. Gently tease the old mix from the outside of the rootball, carefully remove any damaged or twisted roots and prune back elongated roots
  6. Add Bonsai mix to the pot to one third its height
  7. Place the plant in the pot then add more mix to the correct height - the surface of the mix should slope up from just below the rim of the container to the base of the bonsai trunk/stem. The plant should look like it is in a miniature landscape.
  8. Tap the new pot or container gently on the bench to help the new mix settle in and around the roots. Firm lightly
  9. Initial watering of the plant after potting is essential to ensure the mix is thoroughly wet, then allow it to drain freely
  10. Place the pot or container in a sheltered position out of direct sun for a few days to allow the plant to settle and acclimatise before moving back to its permanent home

When to use

  • Potting mixes can be used at any time of the year.
  • Repotting established plants is best done either in Spring or Autumn - avoid Winter or Summer as the extremes of temperature may stress plants
  • Flowering plants should be repotted after they have flowered - enjoy the blooms first!
