Caring for Fruit and Citrus

Your fruit trees will be a part of your garden for a very long time, so it makes sense to take care of them. Whether they are deciduous (lose their leaves in winter) or evergreen (remain leaved all year), they need fertilising, pruning and regular pest patrols.

Deciduous trees have a very definite season, which makes the usual maintenance regime quite simple:

  • Prune while dormant in winter
  • Fertilise when growth starts
  • Watch for pests from flowering (bud burst)

Evergreen trees like citrus are quite different. They usually bear their delicious fruits throughout winter, so they need:

  • Pruning only when necessary, usually after harvest
  • Fertilising throughout the year
  • Regular pest and disease treatments through the year

The most important thing to remember is that the healthier your tree, the tastier and more abundant your harvest!
