FEATURES

  • Native Australian plants are naturally very phosphorus sensitive - this potting mix is ideal for creating low pH environments as high levels of phosphorus (more than 2-3%) causes yellowing of leaves and overall poor health for native plants.
  • Boosted iron and calcium promote healthy dark green foliage and help prevent phosphorus toxicity
  • Wetting agent assists moisture to soak into the potting mix and helps roots absorb nutrients
  • Certified to meet the Australian Standard for Premium potting mixes

SUITABLE FOR

  • All Australian native plants, such as Banksia, Bottlebrush and Grevillea
  • Proteas, Conebushes (Leucadendron), Pincushes (Leucospermums) and other phosphorus sensitive South African plants
  • Safe to use for new plants - the controlled release of nutrients means it will not burn soft leaves or tender young roots

NOT SUITABLE FOR

  • Don't use in hydroponic growing systems or ponds
  • Don't use on lawns - use only specifically named lawn topdress soils on grassed areas

HOW TO USE

In pots, tubs and planter boxes

  1. Use Native Potting & Planting Mix straight from the bag - no further additives required
  2. Water the plants that are to be repotted and allow them to drain
  3. Select a clean pot with large drainage holes and partly fill it with new potting mix
  4. Carefully knock the plant from its existing pot and loosen the root ball. Trim off any dead or damaged roots
  5. Place the plant in the centre of the pot and fill with potting mix
  6. Gently tap the new pot down to help the new potting mix settle in and around the roots. Do not pack the potting mix down
  7. Thoroughly water the plant and allow it to drain freely. If necessary, top the potting mix up again to the suggested level of 2-3cm below the rim
  8. Place the pot in a sheltered spot for 5 days to allow the plant to settle and acclimatise before moving it to a permanent home

In the garden

  1. Dig out the planting hole slightly deeper and about twice the width of the existing pot the plant is coming from
  2. Work the new potting mix into the soil you have removed at the ratio of about 50:50 and place about 10cm or so in the base of the planting hole
  3. Carefully knock the plant from its existing pot without disturbing the root ball too much. Trim off any obvious dead or damaged roots
  4. Position the plant so the soil will be at the same level on the stem as it was in the pot and then backfill the hole with the blended soil and potting mix
  5. Firm lightly and water well to settle the soil
  6. Water newly planted natives at least once a week, or more often in very hot, dry weather

TIP: Australian native plants resent having their roots disturbed. When planting out or potting up, try to keep the root ball intact and don't 'tease' out the roots. Carefully break off the upper 'crust' of the potting mix and rake your fingers gently down the root mass to loosen the outer surface so roots will grow out into the new potting mix or garden soil.

WHEN TO USE

  • Potting mixes can be used at any time of the year.
  • Repotting or planting out of established pot plants is best done either in Spring or Autumn - avoid Winter or Summer as the extremes of temperature may stress plants
  • Flowering plants should be repotted after they have flowered - enjoy the blooms first!

ONGOING PLANT CARE

  • Scotts Osmocote® Citrus & Fruit Potting Mix contains a balanced fertiliser up to 6 months - additional fertiliser may be required in time, depending on plant needs
  • Avoid allowing plants to dry out - plants should be watered immediately after potting and frequently enough to keep the potting mix moist (not wet)
  • Plants should be repotted with new potting mix when they have outgrown the pot or after 12-18 months
