Container Gardening - the Keys to Success

pots-Container gardening is a great way to enjoy growing plants, especially if open garden space is limited or non-existant. You can successfully grow a huge range of plants in pots - from trees and flowers to your own fresh vegetables and herbs.

Here are the keys to success.

  • Use the right potting mix.
  • Prevent loss of moisture.
  • Manage repotting carefully.
  • Arrange pots together.

Use the right potting mix.

Choose a top quality potting mix.

The decision will save you time and effort.

A potting mix like Osmocote® Professional Premium Potting Mix needs watering much less often than regular mixes and contains enough fertiliser to feed your vegetables from sowing to harvesting.

Prevent loss of moisture.

Pots can dry out quickly so use a wetting agent to ensure water is readily absorbed. Osmocote Professional Premium Potting Mix includes both a professional grade wetting agent as well as coir fibre to hold and retain moisture after watering.

Manage repotting carefully.

Once a plant has outgrown its pot, repot it into a pot one size bigger.

Don't plant a small plant straight into a large pot or move a plant up more than one size pot at a time..

Arrange pots thoughtfully.

Group your pots for effect and to create mini garden environments.

Include some tall pots. A variety of shapes and sizes creates an appealing effect.

Pots grouped together will create a cool, humid mini-environment or micro-climate thus reducing moisture loss from both leaves and potting mix.

Summer care

When the heat's on, or when you are going away for more than a couple of days, move all your potted plants to a protected spot where they will receive light to medium shade for most of the day. This will prevent them from drying out too rapidly and also stop burning of the leaves from over-exposure to the sun.

Don't forget to take your hanging planers down too, and place them with other potted plants - hanging baskets are especially susceptible to hot, drying winds and the sun.
