Scotts Australia home

Hello,

Make the most of the last of the gorgeous autumn days to get your garden into tip-top condition. There is much to look forward to in the winter garden and it is fun to plan for the new spring season. When it comes to gardening, every season has it's joys.

This month, our featured garden belongs to Ian Elder of Banksia Grove, WA. Ian wins a hamper of Scotts products worth $100. Tell us about your garden and you could be our next featured gardener.

Best wishes,

Spray & weed safely
Finding it tricky using a herbicide to kill weeds in between precious plants and lawn?

Try this useful tip.

1. Cut the bottom out of a 1L/2L plastic milk container.

2. Trim surrounding plants or grass to keep them out of harm's way.

3. Place the container over the weed and spray Roundup® Ready To Use through the top.

4. Make sure that the leaves of your plants do not flop onto the wet leaves of the weeds when you remove the container.

Potting up

Many areas have received well below their normal autumn rainfall so water conservation remains important, even for potted gardens.

You can grow so many different plants in potted gardens.

  • Bulbs such as daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, Dutch iris & tulips
  • Vegetables such as loose leaf lettuce & baby spinach
  • Herbs such as parsley and thyme
  • Flowers such as pansies, primulas, violas, cinerarias & calendulas
  • Shrubs such as daphne, camellias & azaleas

  • A moisture retentive potting mix such as Osmocote® Premium Potting Mix is extremely helpful. It is suitable for all types of plants and needs watering much less often than regular mixes.

    Kill snails now!

    snails
Attack snail populations throughout autumn so that there are very few snails left to feast on tender new shoots in Spring.

Use Defender™ Snail & Slug Pellets. Look for the new water resistant pack.

    Autumn lawncare
There's so much you can do to repair your lawn and make sure it is ready to enjoy in Spring and Summer.

Don't miss important lawn maintenance! Check our Autumn lawn repair list.

    Helebore
Herbaceous perennials will be starting to look tatty so it will soon be time to cut them down.

Cut asters, wind flowers, penstemon, veronica, hostas & heuchera to just above ground level.

Feed perennials that flower in winter
Give hellebores, bergenia, cineraria & euphorbia a feed of Osmocote® Garden Beds and enjoy their winter display.

    Citrus care
Citrus trees are coming into their fruiting period.
  • Keep them well watered and fertilised. Consistent watering over their wide shallow root systems is important to prevent fruit drop.
  • Use Osmocote® Trees, Shrubs & Citrus to provide a steady release of nutrients.
  • Use Miracle-Gro® All Purpose in conjunction with the OsmocoteŽ fertiliser to provide an occasional extra boost.
  • Keep mulch raked back from the trunks of citrus trees to prevent collar rot.
