Become a successful container gardener

Container gardening is a great way to enjoy growing plants and you can grow a huge range of things in pots - from trees, to your own fresh vegetables and herbs.

Here are the keys to success.

help bust weeds
Some of our garden plants such as arum lilies, agapanthus, cotoneaster, ivy and periwinkle become weeds if they escape into bushland.

They crowd out native plants and this in turn, harms native animals.

Farms and bushland are at risk when weeds or plants escape from our gardens.

Take some simple steps to stop garden escapees.

Delicate and drought tolerant

Roses are amongst the best drought tolerant plants for your garden once they are established.

All plants need regular watering when they are first planted out, but after their first season, roses are very tough.

pruning tips

Prune Spring flowering shrubs and creepers such as weigela, lilac, diosma, jasmine & wisteria as soon as flowering is complete.
Prune hibiscus in spring for a better flowering in late summer/autumn.
Prune native plants such as bottlebrush, grevillea and alyogyne after flowering to keep them bushy and compact.

And don't forget to fertilise after pruning - ideally with a controlled release fertiliser like Osmocote® TOTAL All Purpose, which can be used on all plants.
Sap sucking insects make our plants look tatty and unattractive, and they spread plant viruses and diseases.
